EvDO and EDGE Offer High Speed Access

One feature people are looking at more with cell phones is speed. In particular, how fast are the high speed wireless networks such as EvDO or EDGE? As cell phones become more like PDAs, people are accessing larger files such as email attachments with these devices. Others are interested in using their cell phones as modems to connect notebooks. Although the technology exists to get broadband speed on a cell phone, more than the network is involved. Just because a vendor offers high-speed cell access, doesn't mean you can use it.

In the past year, the US cell phone companies have been building out their wireless high-speed networks. The theory is these networks will keep us connected even when wireless hotspots aren't available by using your cell phone or a PC card. This is a great convenience for mobile professionals who need to access work files or the web. The carriers also have new services such as streaming videos that take advantage of the faster speeds.

These wireless broadband networks have speeds that are many times faster than typical cell phone connections, but the throughput rates can differ dramatically. One difference is the protocol your cell carrier uses. In the US, the predominant standards are CDMA and GSM. Each of these standards has their own high-speed protocol. In some regards, this is like DSL and cable access. Both offer high-speed access at different rates and each requires their own equipment.

As you may have discovered when trying to switch cell phone carriers, sometimes you need a new phone. Although your carrier may have this high-speed option, it doesn't mean it works on your current cell phone. Unlike your notebook, you can't buy hardware to add to your cell phone. Instead, you need to have a phone with the required hardware. The good news is even though the phones are more expensive, the carriers usually subsidize your purchase if you're a new customer. After all, they anticipate a nice revenue stream from data subscription plans. Sorry, but speed comes with a cost.

EVDO (CDMA)

In the CDMA world, the high-speed wireless protocol is called EvDO. Like many abbreviations, this one has two translations: Evolution Data Optimized and Evolution Data Only. The main national carriers include Verizon and Sprint although there are some regional ones.

Using our previous DSL and cable reference, you could say that EVDO is more like cable since it is the faster of the two protocols. While I've seen references that mention burst speeds up to 2Mbps, the typical download speed is often cited in the 300-700 kbps range. The upload speed, which is usually lower on most systems, is about 50-100kbps.

As with many new technologies, they don't arrive at everyone's doorstep at the same time. While Verizon and Sprint have been building their networks, EvDO coverage isn't everywhere. Typically, the carriers do a staged rollout that involves a testing and tweaking period.

One benefit to carriers bringing more consumers online is the phone manufacturers begin to offer more EvDO phones. The pickings are small, but growing. You'll also find that most carrier websites don't make it easy to find these phones. I still find it easier to search eBay for cell phones for specific features such as EvDO.

If you already have an EvDo-capable phone, you may need to do a PRL update to see the signals. If the phones don't detect EvDO, they are designed to work on the slower networks. As the carriers expand their networks, you should consider updating the PRL every couple of months to make sure you have the new cell tower locations.

Update: Feb 10,2007: Both Sprint and Verizon have been deploying EVDO Revision A or Rev A in various cities. This newer technology is roughly 5 to 6 times faster than EVDO.

EDGE (GSM)

Not to be overlooked, the GSM world has its own protocol and acronym EDGE. EDGE stands for Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution. Although it is much slower than EvDO, it does offer some advantages. EDGE coverage may be greater although it is difficult to tell from the vendor maps. The main EDGE carriers include Cingular and T-Mobile.

Another advantage is there are more EDGE compatible phones so in theory it's easier to find a phone with the features you like. As with the CDMA carriers, we had a hard time searching for phones by this feature. In some cases, the carrier's phone detail page failed to mention EDGE. Some cell phone manufacturers such as Nokia have provided their own page.

As with many network connections, it's difficult to tell if you'll get the maximum throughput of 384k for downloads. Carrier spec sheets usually cite 70-135kbps with bursts to 200kbps.

If you've been browsing web pages on a cell phone with a 14.4 data connection, you'll be pleased with either EDGE or EvDO. You'll find your download times are considerably less. You can get a useful traffic report while you're stuck in the jam.

Use Your Email App with Yahoo Mail

No doubt that Yahoo! Mail is one of the most popular web mail programs. One problem for people is they want to be able to send and receive Yahoo! Mail using their email application. They prefer not use the Yahoo! web interface. Since Yahoo! doesn't provide POP3 server settings, this has been an issue. Using a free open source program called YPOPs!, you can use popular email programs like Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora and more to get your Yahoo! email.

If you've not heard of YPOPs!, don't worry. The program has been around for awhile as an open source project called YahooPOPS. The project was started in 2002 by Anuj Seth. This was the same year Yahoo! stopped free POP access. Some people get scared off by open source software, but YPOPs! is stable and well supported.

How YPOPs! Works
Unlike some web based email systems, Yahoo! Mail doesn't offer POP3 access. POP3 is a popular protocol email programs use for getting email. Some of you have tried to set up Yahoo! Mail with your email program such as Outlook Express, but ran into a problem when entering the POP3 server information. The company stopped free POP access unless you upgraded to Yahoo! Mail Plus.

YPOPs! gets around this problem by emulating a POP3/SMTP mail server so you can use almost any email client. The program appears to do this without violating Yahoo! Mail’s Terms and Conditions. Of course, that's a legal determination a lawyer should make if you're worried.

The program quietly sits in your system tray and acts as a proxy. You might think of this proxy as your Yahoo! Mail agent. You only need to configure the program once and you can use it with multiple email programs. As example, I can retrieve my Yahoo! Mail using either Mozilla Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook Express. I don't maintain separate configuration files for each email program

YPOPs! Compatible Email Programs
The program works with a variety of third party email programs. Currently, instructions are available for the following email programs:

* Calypso 3.X
* Eudora 5.x
* Forte Mail Reader v 1.93
* IncrediMail Xe
* Lotus Notes R6
* Microsoft Outlook 2000
* Microsoft Outlook XP
* Microsoft Outlook 2003
* Mozilla Mail
* Mozilla Thunderbird
* Netscape Mail 4.x
* nPOP
* Opera M2
* Outlook Express
* Outlook Express 6
* Pegasus Mail 3.12

Setting up the program was easier than I thought. Some mail emulators I've used before have had complex configuration panels. Not so with YPOPs! as most settings were clear.

Click to enlarge

Clicking an item on the left frame displayed settings on the right. Although there is no built-in help, it really isn't needed. The one area I did stumble was the Download Folders section. I had several folders on Yahoo! Mail and wished to maintain the same folder structure. For some reason, I thought YPOPs! would show me my folder names. It doesn't. You simply type the folder name and press the Add button.

One suggestion on the Download Folders section is uncheck the Bulk Mail folder. I think Yahoo! Mail does a good job with their spam filter and I see no reason why I want to pull those items down to my PC. Periodically, I go to the web and see if there were any items misclassified.

For the most part, I kept the default settings for the program. You may need to tweak some options based on your situation. Your firewall may also want you to grant access to the program.
Setting up Your Yahoo! Mail Account

Once you've configured YPOPs!, you need to configure your email program since it's the one communicating with Yahoo! Mail. On the YPOPs! Email website, there is a dedicated page for configuring your email program to use your Yahoo! Mail account information.

These instruction pages give you the steps you need to set up your account. The steps vary between email programs, but the main points to remember are:

1. Enter your Yahoo! Mail username and password in the required fields

2. Use 127.0.0.1 as your incoming and outgoing server names

3. Increase your server timeout settings

4. Enter the correct Reply To: address.

The email instructions vary based on author. For example, the Outlook Express 6 instruction set was correct, but I wish the author had put line breaks between each step. To remedy this issue, I copied the text into notepad and added the carriage returns to make it easier to read.

I've used YPOPs! with Outlook Express 6 and Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5. Thunderbird took a little longer to set up. I somehow managed to have the wrong port setting. The error was clearly mine, but it was nice to know the program provides a ypops.log which can help in troubleshooting problems. There is also an active YPOPs! forum where users can post questions. If you hit any snags, the forum is a great resource since someone may have already posted an answer.

Now that I have my programs configured, I'm appreciating Yahoo! Mail even more. I've always relied on Yahoo! Mail to handle many of my newsletters subscriptions. Seldom do I subscribe to offers using my primary email address. With YPOPS!, I can scan and read these emails much faster than I could on the web. And, I can't say I miss the ads.

Update Jan 22, 2007: Version 0.8.8 now works with the new Yahoo! email system.

Different Types of Proxies

Transparent Proxy

A transparent proxy announces to the world that it's a proxy, and passes on your information. It provides no privacy improvements. It can provide a benefit by caching frequently accessed pages; many companies also use this system for filtering purposes.

Anonymous Proxy

An anonymous proxy offers the caching benefits of a transparent proxy, while hiding your IP address (by replacing with either the proxies IP, or a random address. The downside to this approach is that sites that use address detection to establish unique users (online games, voting, some logins) will not be able to distinguish you from others in your domain. Of course, that might be a bonus sometimes.

Elite Proxy / Highly Anonymous Proxy

A highly anonymous (often known as an elite proxy) makes your system look the same as a non-proxied system (with the proxy server's IP address). This provides the best security; however, all the caveats of an anonymous proxy are still present. In addition, an anonymous proxy's existance can be detected, and the server can suggest workarounds, but there's no way to detect an elite proxy. Again, that may be your goal.

Proxy Basic

What is Proxy Server?

A proxy server is a machine that sits between the proxy users and the servers that they need access to. When a proxy user requests a certain remote resource using a URL, the proxy server receives this request and fetches the resource to fulfill the client’s request. This process enables the proxy server to store the requested content in a cache. Any new request that asks for information already in the cache no longer needs to be serviced by fetching it from the remote server. Instead, the new request is serviced from the cached data. In typical proxy scenarios, the purpose of a proxy server is to fetch the requested resource from the remote server, return it to the requesting user, and cache it in local drives.

What is an anonymous proxy server?

Anonymous proxy does not transfer the information about the IP-address of its user, and thus effectively hide the information about you and your surfing interests. In addition, some proxies (the so-called elite proxies) can also hide the fact that a user surfing through a proxy server. So there are two types of anonymous proxies (see below).

Anonymous Proxy server does not send HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR variable to host, this improves privacy since your IP address cannot be logged.
Elite proxy (high anonymity) does not send HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR, HTTP_VIA and HTTP_PROXY_CONNECTION variables. Host doesn't even know you are using proxy server and of course it doesn't know your IP address.

What is CoDeeN proxy?

PlanetLab (CoDeeN) proxy - The PlanetLab Consortium is a collection of academic, industrial, and government institutions cooperating to support and enhance the PlanetLab overlay network. CoDeeN is an academic testbed Content Distribution Network (CDN) built on top of PlanetLab by the Network Systems Group at Princeton University. This testbed CDN consists of a network of high-performance proxy servers. Currently, proxy servers have been deployed on many PlanetLab nodes. These proxy servers behave both as request redirectors and server surrogates. They cooperate with each other and collectively provide a fast and robust web content delivery service to CoDeeN users. Note that all accesses via CoDeeN are logged, mostly to aid in identifying abuse and other forms of damage control. However, these proxies are good for browsing some Internet resources.

How to set up Internet Explorer 6.x for using proxy?

1. Click "Service" \ "Internet Options";
2. Click "Connections";
3. If you use Dial-Up connection, choose your connection and click "Settings" button,
if you use LAN connection, click "LAN Settings" button in the "Local Area Network (LAN) Settings" group box;
Enable "use a proxy server";
4. In fields "Address" and "port", type proxy name and proxy port number;
5. If nessesary, enable "bypass proxy server for local addresses";
6. Click "OK";

Public Proxies and the Low

According to to U.S. law, 18 U.S.C. § 1030 (Fraud and Related Activity in Connection with Computers) applies only when anyone who knowingly accesses a computer without authorization or has knowingly exceeds his authorized access on that computer. Because an opened proxy, by default, allows connections and use of the service by anyone in the WWW, its administrator has essentially authorized everyone to use the proxy.

Why some server administrators make mistakes with their proxy servers?

It happened because somebody just dropped a proxy server on their network without fully considering the consequences of their action. They didn't bother to properly design a server access control list, and because it is available on the public internet, a spammer found it and began to use it for their spamming ventures. Quite often a server administrator is very upset at his mistake, and is looking to "pursue each ISP in attempts to track down the guilty parties". Unfortunately, he is ignoring the person who had the most power to prevent this situation. Himself. Live, learn, realize that you made a mistake configuring your server, and get back to working. Unless your business is that of hunting spammers, it really will not be worth your while to waste money and time chasing ISPs and shadows of spam fiends.
